Overdraft Protection What You Need to Know About Overdraft Coverage

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it for you so you aren’t charged a returned item fee by the merchant. It’s important to know when you will be charged overdraft fees, and what your options are for coverage.

Qualstar can cover overdrafts in two ways:

  1. Basic Courtesy Pay is standard overdraft protection that comes with your checking account and has coverage amounts based on your history. It does not cover one-time Visa® Debit Card purchases or ATM transactions. For one-time Visa Debit Card purchases and ATM transactions, you may opt in for Extended Courtesy Pay (opt-in form below.) Each coverage option incurs a $20 per-item fee (for each merchant presentment) for items $20 and over; items below $20 are paid automatically, with no fee.1
  2. Overdraft Transfer links your checking account to a savings, money market, Visa® Credit Card, or line of credit account. This is not set up automatically on accounts, and you must let us know if you would like to link a savings, money market, Visa Credit, or line of credit account for overdraft protection. There is no transfer fee for overdraft transfer from a savings or money market account. However, normal cash advance fees for lines-of-credit and Visa Credit Cards still apply.
    • How does Basic Courtesy Pay work?

Basic Courtesy Pay comes automatically with all Qualstar checking accounts and is available immediately at account opening. With Basic Courtesy Pay, we authorize and pay overdrafts for the following transactions: checks, ACH, electronic fund transfers, automatic bill payments, and other recurring electronic transactions made using your checking account number. (This does not include Visa Debit or ATM card transactions.)

Opting OUT of Basic Courtesy Pay: You may opt out of Basic Courtesy Pay at any time via Mobile* or Home Banking, or by asking a member service representative.

    • How does Extended Courtesy Pay work?

With Extended Courtesy Pay you can use your Qualstar Visa Debit Card for the things you need, when you need them, even if the funds aren’t available in your account at the time!1

Opting IN to Extended Courtesy Pay: If you also want us to authorize and pay overdrafts on ATM and everyday debit card transactions, simply log in to Mobile* or Home Banking and choose the “More” menu to access the “Courtesy Pay” widget, or complete and submit the form below.

Basic Courtesy Pay does not authorize and pay overdrafts for ATM or everyday Visa Debit Card transactions. For overdrafts on these transactions to be paid, you need Extended Courtesy Pay.
